How do I know the valve cover gasket is leaking?
Look along the top edge of the engine for oil weeping down from the cover, and for oil burning off with a smell where it drips onto the exhaust. A hardened, crushed gasket is the cause.

If you already have the area apart for other work, fit a fresh one while the labor is done. Otherwise replace it once it weeps.
