"This is the rear inner wheel seal. A leaking wheel seal soaks the brake shoes, so do this the moment you see oil at the drum. Drive the new seal square and check the axle for the wear groove that killed the old one."

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know the wheel seal is leaking?

Pull the rear drum and look for oil on the inside of the drum, shoes, or tire. Oil at the rear brake from the axle means the wheel seal has failed and is contaminating the brake.

Do I need to remove the drum?

Yes - pull the rear drum to reach the wheel seal, and check the axle surface for a wear groove that could leak past a new seal.

Should I replace this if it is not leaking yet?

If you already have the area apart for other work, fit a fresh one while the labor is done. Otherwise replace it once it weeps.
