Turn the wheels to full lock and inspect each boot for splits, cracks, or slung grease. Grease flung around the inside of the wheel means a torn boot - replace it before grit ruins the joint.

Usually yes - the joint has to come apart to slip the boot on, so plan to pull the shaft or the joint.
