Kei Trucks in the U.S. (2026)

Federal law lets anyone bring kei trucks into the U.S. if 25 years have passed since their manufacture. Still, whether these vehicles hit local streets depends on where you live, as individual states may still require inspections, registration, or emissions compliance.

  • Older than 25 years? That’s the cutoff point set by federal guidelines. These vehicles slip into the country without needing to meet modern safety tests. Emissions checks don’t apply either.

  • Close to half the country lets kei trucks drive without extra paperwork. Some areas shut it down completely unless you file an exception.

  • State checks might still apply to kei trucks over 25 years old. Kei trucks younger than 25 years can’t hit U.S. roads at all.
